LASIK Eye Surgery: Freedom from Glasses
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is the world's most commonly performed elective surgery. It reshapes the cornea using an excimer laser to correct myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), and astigmatism.
Are You a Good Candidate?
You may be a candidate for LASIK if you:
- Are 18 years or older with a stable spectacle prescription for at least 1 year
- Have adequate corneal thickness
- Have no significant dry eye, keratoconus, or autoimmune conditions
- Are within the treatable prescription range (typically up to -12D of myopia)
What Disqualifies Someone from LASIK?
Not everyone is suitable. Conditions like thin corneas, severe dry eye, keratoconus, or uncontrolled diabetes may make LASIK unsafe. Alternative procedures like LASEK, PRK, or implantable lenses may be recommended instead.
The LASIK Procedure
The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes for both eyes. After numbing eye drops, a laser creates a thin flap in the cornea, another laser reshapes the underlying tissue, and the flap is repositioned — no stitches needed.
Recovery
Most patients achieve 6/6 (20/20) vision or better within 24–48 hours. Minor fluctuations, dryness, and glare may persist for a few weeks as your eyes heal.
